Vaccination and health: not required.

Consular visa is required.

Validity of the visa: a single entry.

Term to stamp the visa in the passport: Three 3 months, once authorized.

Term to enter Costa Rica once stamped in the passport: the visa must be used within a maximum period of sixty (60) days.

You can stay in Costa Rica up to thirty (30) calendar days, extendable up to ninety (90) calendar days.

Document to be presented at the point of entry to Costa Rica:

  1. Minimum validity of the passport is 180 calendar days.

  2. Valid passport or travel document. Only machine-readable passports or travel documents will be accepted, in accordance with the guidelines established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and with the validity determined by these guidelines.

  3. Visa, when required as established in these guidelines.

  4. Proof of economic solvency, with a minimum of USD$100.00 (one hundred US dollars) per month or fraction of a month of legal stay in the country.

  5. Ticket, ticket or return ticket to the country of origin or continuation of the trip, or the navigation plan showing the port of destination.

  6. Not to have impediment of entrance to the national territory.

 


Application for Consular Visa: 

The consular visa must be managed by the interested person personally before the Costa Rican consular agents in his/her country of origin, who will be the competent ones to grant or deny it. Persons requesting a consular visa have two options to apply for their visa application:

Through a digital system, if it is enabled for the country of origin of the foreign person. In this case, the consulate will inform you.


By means of the presentation of the physical documents directly at the corresponding Consulate.


Request addressed to the Costa Rican Consul in which the following must be included:  

Full name and surname, nationality, passport number, place of residence, reason for the trip, expected time of stay in Costa Rica, place and approximate date of arrival and departure from the country, profession or trade, exact address of the place where the applicant will stay in Costa Rica, date and place of birth of the applicant, fax number to receive notifications, date and signature.

 

  1. Valid passport or travel document, with expiration date not less than six months. In addition, copy of the totality of the same.

  2. Tentative reservation of the ticket, ticket or return ticket or ticket of continuation of the trip.

  3. Proof of economic means for their subsistence during their stay in the country.

  4. Provide a current criminal record. If they are in another language, they must be provided with their due translation into Spanish.

  5. The Consul may request, if necessary, additional documents issued in the applicant's country of origin, as long as their presentation is essential for the analysis in the granting of the visa.

  6. Once all the requirements have been presented, the applicant must fill out the visa application form, which will be available on the website www.migracion.go.cr. This form must be filled out legibly and clearly, without erasures or corrections, to be submitted to the Consulate.

  • Once all the requirements have been submitted, the Consul has 30 calendar days to resolve the visa application.

  • Once all the requirements have been completed, the Consul will inform the interested person of the date and time when he/she will be informed of the resolution.

  • If the Consul has any doubts about the documents submitted, he/she may request clarification and may also request a personal interview with the applicant.

  • The visa must be used within sixty days, from the respective notification to the applicant or his/her representative, and is valid to enter the country only once.

  • Each consulate individually establishes its schedules and procedures, according to the personnel it has, so you should inquire with the Costa Rican consular authorities on these issues. Remember that all services offered by the General Directorate of Immigration and Foreigners are free of charge, only the taxes established by law must be paid.

  • Go only to duly identified personnel to inquire about requirements, appointments and attention quotas.


Transit Visa:

Nicaraguan citizens may apply at the Costa Rican Consulates in Nicaragua and Panama, for a single entry transit visa or double transit visa, as long as their trip is for reasons:

  • Commercial or labor, including agricultural activities, domestic employment, construction, private security, and care for senior citizens, persons with disabilities and minors. 

Transit visa requirements:

  1. Transit visa application form. 

  2. Proof of payment of consular fees as applicable. 

  3. Travel tickets stating the dates of entry and departure from Costa Rica; in the case of a double visa, the ticket of the second entry must state a date within the following 90 days. 

  4. Letter from the employer indicating the time worked, functions and salary. In case the employer is a legal entity, a copy of the document proving the legal existence of the company must also be attached. Self-employed workers must provide certification of income from a Certified Public Accountant.

  5. Certification showing that the person seeking the transit visa does not have a criminal record. 

  6. Nicaraguan dependents of the persons indicated in the previous paragraph, who have a first degree relationship with the person responsible for their support (spouse, parents, children up to the age of 25 years old), may also apply for a transit visa. For these purposes, this relationship must be accredited with a suitable document no more than six months old, unless the document expressly indicates an expiration date.

Important: 

  • Entry to Costa Rica with a transit visa will be valid by air or land, through the immigration checkpoints duly authorized by the General Directorate of Immigration and Foreigners.

  • The holder of a transit visa will have a maximum of 48 hours to transit through Costa Rica. The first entry to Costa Rica must be made within thirty days from the date of issuance of the visa. 

  • In the case of a double transit visa, the deadline for the second entry into Costa Rica is 90 days from the date of the first entry. Issuance of two visas for Nicaraguans.

  • The issuance of two consular visas is authorized according to the procedure established by the Costa Rican Consulate in Managua, Nicaragua for those Nicaraguans who justify the need to enter the country twice. 

  • The cost of consular visas is the one established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship and the cost of two visas must be cancelled.

  2. Visa application, ticket for continuity of trip or return to the country of origin. Proof of economic solvency, which corresponds to US$100.00 for each month of tourism,
