To be eligible to enter the country as a Refugee or an Asylum Seeker one must fit the universal architype of a refugee. Additionally, applicants must be aware that determinants for refugee status in The Bahamas may differ from other countries.

The universal has a well-founded fear of persecution of his or her:

• Race
• Religion
• Nationality
• Membership in a particular social group
• Political opinion

Is outside his/her country of origin. Is unable or unwilling to avail himself / herself of the protection of that country, or to return there, for fear of persecution.
